At GW Neurology, resident wellness is a cornerstone of our program. We don’t just talk about it—we invest in it and live it every day. Wellness is part of our culture, our mission, and the way we train future neurologists. We want residents who share this vision and are excited to grow within a supportive, connected community. Below are some of our initiatives:
Personal ½ Days
Residents receive a scheduled half-day during elective rotations, typically on Fridays, to use for personal needs such as medical appointments, errands, or rest.
Resident Meetings with the Program Director (Monthly)
The Program Director meets with residents monthly in an open forum to discuss concerns, share updates, and gather feedback, ensuring transparent and responsive communication.
Office of Wellness and Resiliency Programming (Monthly)
Through our partnership with GW’s Office of Resiliency and Wellbeing, residents participate in monthly wellness activities such as yoga, acupuncture, therapy dog visits, museum tours, and creative workshops.
Reflective Writing Series (Monthly)
Residents take part in guided reflective writing sessions focused on resilience, empathy, and professional growth. Each session combines expert facilitation, structured writing, and group discussion.
Neuron on the Run (Monthly)
Once a month, residents are given an extended lunch break to enjoy a group walk or outing around Washington, DC—combining exercise, social connection, and wellness.
Adulting in Neurology Series (Monthly)
This series introduces residents to practical, non-clinical topics such as financial planning, physician contracts, medical banking, and professional development skills.
Peer Mentoring Matches (PGY 1/3 and PGY 2/4)
Each resident is paired with a colleague in a different training year to foster mentorship, guidance, and camaraderie across classes.
Outside-of-Work Group Activities
Residents regularly organize informal gatherings—such as dinners, outings, or shared hobbies—to strengthen relationships and community beyond the hospital setting.
